I went in really looking forward to
it, but I would have to say that the best parts were in the
trailor. I did not like the negative stereotyping, it actually made me not feel proud to
be South Asian for a minute. It was also full of bad acting, meaningless sex
and ended with no closure. But I admire the makers of the film for having the
guts to make it. It is different than American Desi and American Chai because it
is more serious, which probably makes it more emotional. But being a 2nd
generation desi myself, I thoght the film portrayed us as being horny, confused
morons who are embarassed of their culture.
It made me think of something... do 2nd generation desis form a different cultural identity depending on where they are brought up? It seems to me, that most of the "confused" desis I met growing up came from affluent suburbs... or maybe I am making an unfair generalization.
I am very curious why it is getting such praise... because I think it sucked. Bad acting, weak plot, and as Pia said... lots of unanswered questions at the end. I guess it didnt leave me with any closure. All the reviews I read in the papers have been positive, but I know (that atleast in Philadelphia) the reviews were written by non-South Asians... I dont know if that makes a difference. Maybe it was given praise because it gives out the message West-good, East-backwards.
